FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a completely safe and natural, yet altered, state of mind. It is like being completely relaxed. You mind is focused and alert. You enter hypnotic states daily through daydreaming, driving (have you ever missed your exit because you were lost in thought?), playing a sport (often called being in the zone), and watching television.

Is it possible to stay in a hypnotized state?

No. Not at all. You can come out of the hypnotic state whenever you want to and there is no lasting sleepiness (although you will feel good)!

Will I lose consciousness?

No. You will be aware of what is happening at all times and be in control at all times. You will know where you are and what you are doing. You can return to being fully awake at any time that you chose.

Can I drive after a Hypnotherapy session?

As hypnosis is a natural occurring state that happens to everybody through the day, there should be no reason why you are not able to drive

What happens during hypnotherapy for weight loss?

  • Your hypnotherapist will guide you into a state of deep relaxation.

  • Once your body and mind are fully relaxed, your hypnotherapist will be able to access your unconscious mind (the part of us that works all the time but that we're not necessarily aware of, i.e. innate instincts and survival mechanisms).

Soothing, carefully worded scripts can be used to explore a client's reasons for overeating and suggest new ways of thinking through visualisations. You have the control to reject any suggestions you don't feel happy with without any guidance from your hypnotherapist.

What is mindfulness and how can it help?

Mindfulness is about being in the here and now. It is about focussing on the present and being more aware of what’s going on around you, and inside your body, from moment to moment.

Mindfulness involves acceptance, which means that we pay attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them without believing, that there is a right or wrong way to think or feel in a given moment. When we practice mindfulness, our thoughts tune into what we are sensing in the present moment rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future.

It is a useful skill to have because it helps us to recognise when our attention becomes focussed on unhelpful thoughts, for example worrying about something that might happen in the future. By practising mindfulness, you can learn to recognise when this happens, and choose when to pay attention to your thoughts and when it’s more helpful to let them go.

Mindfulness can form part of a treatment plan in combination with hypnosis, CBT and applied relaxation, depending on your goals.
